The Legend Behind the Kumbh Mela

  • The mythological origins of the Kumbh Mela are deeply rooted in Hindu mythology. According to the legend, during the Samudra Manthan (Churning of the Ocean of Milk), the Devas (gods) and Asuras (demons) fought for the Amrita (nectar of immortality). In the ensuing battle, a few drops of the Amrita fell to Earth at four specific locations, which are now the sites of the Kumbh Mela.

    • Paush Purnima: The festival begins on this auspicious full moon day.  
    • Makar Sankranti: This is the day when the Sun transitions from Capricorn to Aquarius, signifying the beginning of the winter solstice.
    • Mauni Amavasya: A day of complete silence and meditation.  
    • Basant Panchami: The festival of colors and the arrival of spring.  
    • Maghi Purnima: Another significant full moon day.  
    • Mahashivratri: The night of Lord Shiva.  
    • Shahi Snan (Royal Bath)  

    The most significant event of the Kumbh Mela is the Shahi Snan, or the royal bath. On specific auspicious days, millions of pilgrims converge at the Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers. They take a dip in the sacred waters, believing it to purify their souls and absolve them of their sins.
